Intelligent Routing 101

In travel, payments donโ€™t just need to go through โ€” they need to go through efficiently.

With high booking volumes, fragmented payment preferences, and thin margins, travel merchants must minimize declines, optimize cost per transaction, and ensure global coverage. Thatโ€™s where Intelligent Routing comes in.

Intelligent Routing refers to a payment orchestration function that dynamically selects the optimal Payment Service Provider (PSP) or acquirer for each transaction in real time.

Rather than relying on a static processor, travel merchants can:

๐Ÿ”น Route transactions based on issuer location, BIN, or currency

๐Ÿ”น Avoid downtime by rerouting to backup PSPs

๐Ÿ”น Choose providers based on approval rates, cost efficiency, or risk thresholds

๐Ÿ”น Reduce false declines and retry failed transactions instantly

This level of control enables travel brands to avoid single points of failure and fine-tune their acceptance strategy market by market.

๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ˆ๐ญ ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ:

1๏ธโƒฃ A customer initiates a transaction at checkout

2๏ธโƒฃ The Payment Orchestration Platform analyzes business rules and real-time conditions

3๏ธโƒฃ It selects the best-fit PSP (e.g., Adyen, Solidgate, Getnet, or others)

4๏ธโƒฃ The transaction is routed and submitted to the acquirer

5๏ธโƒฃ If declined or failed, backup routing paths kick in โ€” automatically

With orchestration, routing becomes programmable, fail-safe, and revenue-driven.

Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline uses routing logic to connect with multiple PSPs (Payplug, Checkout.com...) across Europe, selecting acquirers by local success rates to reduce false declines on debit cards.

โœ”๏ธ Southwest Airlines leverages provider-specific routing to reduce processing fees and better support regional payment methods like Boleto and PIX.

โœ”๏ธ Expedia Group balances payment traffic across multiple PSPs (e.g., Stripe, Checkout.com, Adyen, Getnet...) using intelligent failover โ€” reducing downtime risk and improving customer trust during peak season.

These companies aren't just improving infrastructure โ€” theyโ€™re using payments as a lever for efficiency, trust, and global scale.
