Bizum Prepares 2026 In-Store Payments Launch to Challenge Visa and Mastercard
Hey Payments Fanatic!
Bizum is preparing a major expansion for 2026 with a new in-store payment solution designed to reduce reliance on Visa and Mastercard.
The Spanish bank-backed platform aims to let customers pay directly at physical merchants through a dedicated app.
The service, known as Bizum Pay, will allow payments straight from a customer’s bank account without requiring a card. Banks are also exploring embedding the functionality inside their existing apps.
The move fits into a broader European push for payments autonomy. Banks want alternatives that reduce dependency on US infrastructures while enabling cross-border, instant, mobile-to-mobile transactions.
And on top of all that, the discussions continue around a pan-European framework that could interconnect Bizum with systems in Italy, Portugal, France and Germany, including Wero.
Europe’s Payments landscape is entering a new phase, and 2026 is shaping up to be a defining year.
Stay informed. Payments move fast, and I’ll bring the next update your way tomorrow.
Cheers,
Marcel
