Vipps Sells Checkout to Kustom: A Nordic Payments Power Shift

Hey Payments Fanatic!

Vipps MobilePay is shaking up the Nordic payments landscape by selling its Checkout solution to Kustom, the emerging payments platform spun out from Klarna.

Rather than keeping its own online checkout stack, Vipps is doubling down on its core identity as a mobile‑first payment brand while partnering with a specialist player to power the e‑commerce checkout experience.

As part of the deal, Kustom becomes a recommended checkout partner for Vipps MobilePay. This means merchants looking to offer Vipps MobilePay’s payment methods will be directed to Kustom’s checkout, and that Kustom’s merchants will be offered Vipps MobilePay’s product portfolio.

The takeaway is that the Nordic payments stack is fragmenting and re‑aggregating at the same time.

Local rails (Vipps, MobilePay) anchor user‑owned wallets, while specialists like Kustom wrap them into richer, more monetisable checkout and conversion layers.

Expect more tuck‑in acquisitions and re‑bundling as pan‑Nordic and European players redraw the map of where they create and capture value.
