Apple Pay Takes Two Very Different Routes: India and Iraq
Hey Payments Fanatic!
Apple Pay is finally making its way into two very different markets: India and Iraq.
In India, Apple is reportedly targeting an October launch, initially supporting Visa and Mastercard credit cards but not UPI. That's the interesting part. Apple is entering one of the world's most advanced real-time payment markets, but it still needs approval from NPCI and a sponsoring bank before it can plug into the rail that dominates everyday payments in India.
At the same time, Apple Pay is preparing to enter Iraq, where Credit Bank of Iraq says the service is coming soon. The timing is notable: Iraq is pushing to modernise its banking sector and strengthen its links with international financial infrastructure, so bringing a major global wallet into the market is another small but visible step in that direction.
Two launches, two very different payment markets. And they show how much the local infrastructure still matters, even for a company as powerful as Apple.
You'll also find a closer look at PayPal's Q2 numbers: $486.4 billion in payment volume and strong cash generation, but lower GAAP net income and a weaker operating margin.
Now, let's dive into today's biggest Payments stories. 👇 See you tomorrow!

At low volume everything works. At scale, three things break first:
→ Two concurrent orders hit the same balance. No atomic reservation. Overdraft.
→ Retries without idempotency keys. Duplicate fills. Corrupted ledger.
→ Stop orders inside the active book degrade exactly when markets are most volatile.
DashDevs LLC published a deep technical breakdown of the five service boundaries that survive production load — OMS, matching engine, trigger monitor, ledger and liquidity router — based on their work building Dopay, a crypto-fiat exchange with USDC intermediary routing.
The architecture detail that matters most : single-writer per instrument shard on the matching engine. And double-entry ledger postings settled in the same transaction as execution.
