Worldline brings AI agents closer to payments

Worldline brings AI agents closer to payments

Hey Payments Fanatic!

AI is starting to change where the checkout happens.

Worldline is getting ready for that shift, launching a payment handler for Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard backed by Google and other industry partners.

UCP is designed to let people discover and buy products through AI-powered shopping experiences.

For merchants, that means they can accept payments through these new channels without having to build a completely separate setup. Worldline’s solution supports cards, mobile wallets, and European payment methods.

It’s still early, but the numbers suggest this could become a pretty big deal.

McKinsey estimates that agentic commerce could reach $3–5 trillion by 2030 🤯

If that happens, payments won’t just happen when you reach a retailer’s checkout page. The checkout could become part of the AI experience itself.

And that could change how online payments work.

Here’s what else is happening in payments 👇

Back at it tomorrow!

Cheers,

Marcel

GOLDEN NUGGET

Your card has no battery. No power source at all. Yet it just paid for your coffee.

How?

The tap: 300ms, no battery
The tap: 300ms, no battery

Everything happens in about 300 milliseconds:

Here’s what happens during a single tap:

→ 0–50 ms · Power up

The terminal’s electromagnetic field induces a current in the card’s antenna.

The chip boots on borrowed energy, the same basic physics behind wireless charging.

→ 50–110 ms · Hello

The card and terminal establish how they’ll communicate and select the payment application.

→ 110–180 ms · The terminal asks

Amount. Currency. Limits. Risk checks.

Does this tap need a PIN?

→ 180–260 ms · The card signs

The chip creates a one-time cryptogram — the ARQC — for that exact payment.

One payment. One proof.

→ 260–300 ms · Power down

The card leaves the electromagnetic field and the chip shuts down again.

Inert plastic, until the next tap.

And this is perhaps the coolest part:

That one-time cryptogram is why simply capturing the contactless exchange isn’t enough to replay the same payment.

It was created for that transaction.

One tap. One cryptogram. One use.

All of this happens in around 300 milliseconds.
