Hey Payments Fanatic!

A card payment can take a few seconds. Getting a country reconnected to the global payments system takes considerably longer.

That’s what makes Syria’s latest payments milestone so interesting to me: the country has completed its first international card transaction in more than 15 years, with QNB Group, QNB Syria, and Mastercard enabling international card acceptance for eligible local merchants.

It may be just one transaction, but a lot is happening behind it: banks, payment networks, technology, and regulators working together to reconnect Syria to the international financial system.

And the impact could extend well beyond card payments, giving local businesses a way to serve international customers and bringing Syria’s payments infrastructure closer to the global economy.

For Syrian merchants, it means one thing: international cardholders can finally pay by card again.

Let’s get into today’s payments stories. 👇

See you on Monday!

Cheers,

Marcel
